Driscoll AG Agronomy Alert – Green Peach Aphid Detected
Driscoll AG Agronomy Alert:
Green Peach Aphid Detected in Canola Crops — Western Murray Valley and Southern Mallee Regions and Elmore district more locally.
Recent crop monitoring has confirmed the presence of Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) in canola crops across the Western Murray Valley and Southern Mallee regions. Growers are advised to increase monitoring efforts immediately, as early detection is critical for effective management and to mitigate the potential transmission of turnip yellows virus (TuYV).
Populations appear to be establishing rapidly, with mild windy winter conditions favouring further spread. While there is resistance to a broad range of insecticide groups, specific control options remain available.
Green Peach Aphid adults are up to 3mm long and vary in colour from yellow to green to pink. They can generally be found on the underside of the leaf or in the middle growing point of the plant. The feeding damage from the aphid itself is often minor, but the TuYV that can be transmitted as it feeds can cause yield losses from 10-80%. Once a plant is infected with TuYV there is no cure. TuYV systems include red/purple discolouration on edges of older leaves and stunting and stiffening of lower discoloured leaves.
Suggested strategies -
Inspect canola crops regularly.
Assess aphid densities and virus symptoms.
